Prescription Take Back Program
The Hamtramck Drug Free Coalition in partnership with the Hamtramck Police Department and the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network- DWIHN has been promoting the Prescription Take Back Program.
What does this mean? Simply put, the community is asked to bring unused, unneeded, or expired medication to the drop box located in the Hamtramck Police Department, 3401 Evaline Street, Hamtramck, MI or to our upcoming "Take-Back" day (see Events tab for more information). The drop box at the Police Department lobby is available 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Why is this important? Returning prescription medications to a proper receptacle helps curb prescription misuse and prevents water supply contamination. Prescription drug misuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in the country. Help us by starting with YOURSELF and YOUR FAMILY. Clean out your medicine cabinet of any unused or expired pills and drop them off at the drop box. No questions asked. Some people who misuse medicines, including teens, may get the drugs from a friend or relative, often without their knowledge, and not from a drug dealer. Protect our friends and family from accidental poisoning by getting rid of excess.
At this time only prescription medication, over-the-counter medicine, medications for pets, vitamins, as well as vaping devices and cartridges (as long as lithium batteries are removed) can be dropped off. We DO NOT accept liquids, ointment medications, or any sharps. Please mark out all personal information from prescription labels before disposing in the box or better yet, just drop the pills in and dispose of the bottles at home.
“DEA’s Take Back Day events have been extremely successful in not only removing potentially dangerous unused drugs from our nation’s medicine cabinets, but also in raising awareness of their link to addiction and overdose deaths,” said DEA Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon. “In an effort to combat another emerging public health threat – particularly to our nation’s youth – we’re proud to have extended the same opportunity to those looking to dispose of harmful vaping products.”
The Hamtramck Drug Free Community Coalition is excited to provide this valuable service and lock bags for medication to the community and thanks the Hamtramck Police Department for its continued support of youth substance misuse prevention programming in Hamtramck as well as the Piast Institute, which hosts the coalition and its activities.
